Who's Who at the Cathedral of Saint Paul

Archbishop John C. Nienstedt was born on March 19, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1974 following studies at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He served as associate pastor or pastor of numerous Detroit area parishes and as rector of Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. In June of 1994, he was named an Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit by Pope John Paul II. On June 12, 1996 he was appointed Titular Bishop of Alton and Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit and ordained as Auxiliary Bishop July 9, 1996. On August 8, 1996 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop for the south region of the Archdiocese, serving 88 parishes. On June 1, 2001 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the third Bishop of New Ulm, Minnesota. Pope Benedict XVI appointed then Bishop Nienstedt to the post of Coadjutor Archbishop for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minnesota on April 24, 2007. On May 2, 2008 he officially assumed the duties of Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, following the retirement of Archbishop Harry J. Flynn.
